A way you can help

I write this three weeks to the day after the terrorist attacks of September 11. I am saddened for all of the family members and friends who have lost loved ones. I am angry about the huge cultural differences that allow fringe fundamentalists to slap modern civilization. I am bewildered how something so tragic, so unbelievable, could happen anywhere, much less on American soil.

But the greatest emotion I have is pride. I am proud of our country; our people and how we are responding to this affront on our way of life.

A week after the attack, I asked companies that have a relationship with this magazine to share what they are doing in response to these devastating events. Their response was overwhelming.

I can’t possibly list all the responses in this small space. Suppliers readily donated rescue gear and tools. Employees rallied to wish fellow workers well as they were called into active duty from the reserves.

Other companies have made huge donations to the Red Cross or the United Way September 11 Fund, and encouraged employees to donate by matching their donations one-for-one.

Still others are awaiting calls from the front lines in Washington D.C. and New York to supply any specific tools needed to assist in the recovery efforts.

Then, some companies would not comment because they looked at it as self-promotion in a time when commercial interests take a back seat to national interests.

Our country has been kicked in the teeth by an extremist and his thugs located halfway around the world. It hurts.

But the pain is overwhelmed by the caring, the strength and the resolve that we, the people, have put forth to overcome shock and exact justice against our transgressors.

Contractor Tools and Supplies has initiated a way you can help. For every FREE subscription to Contractor Tools and Supplies we receive from this issue, we will donate $1 to the relief fund you select on the subscription card. It costs you nothing and will continue your free subscription to this publication.

This donation effort will run through December 15, 2001, so fill out the subscription card on the cover wrap of this issue (if it has one) or use the form found on page 56. Feel free to photocopy  the form and give it to your fellow workers. We want to make this a substantial contribution to the recovery effort.

Published in the November/December 2001 issue of Contractor Tools and Supplies magazine.
