Stay up to date on road worker safety
The International Safety Equipment Association recently launched a newsletter to help anyone working in road, bridge, tunnel or airport construction to work more safely.

It features good information about safety equipment standards, PPE use, hazard protection, new PPE technologies and case histories where PPE has prevented injuries or death.

To get on the mail list, send your mailing address to Joe Walker, ISEA, 1901 North Moore St., Arlington, VA 22209. Or e-mail him at: jwalker@safetyequipment.org. It’s also available at: www.safetyequipment.org

Steel erection rule effective January 18, 2002
Although the Steel Erection Rule was postponed for six months, the new regulation will go into effect January 18, 2002, according to the International Safety Equipment Association.

One of the biggest changes involves the establishment of a controlled decking zone (CDZ) that aims to prevent decking fatalities. Deckers in a CDZ must be protected at heights greater than two stories or 30' and connectors between 15' and 30' must wear fall-arrest or restraint equipment and be tied off or be provided another means of fall protection. The rule also requires fall protection for others engaged in steel erection at heights greater than 15'.

A qualified person must be available to train exposed workers in the use of fall protection systems. Watch for more information in the January/February 2002 issue of Contractor Tools and Supplies.

First Aid takes on a new
meaning under new record keeping rule

OSHA recently released the Record Keeping Rule from its review process, which contains changes that redefines First Aid and makes it clearer that only medical treatment needs to be recorded in the OSHA 300 log.

OSHA considers it First Aid if it:
• is administered after the injury or illness and at the location where it occurred.
• consists of a one-time or short-term treatment.
• is simple and requires little or no technology.
• can be administered by people with little training or self-administered.
• is administered to keep the condition from getting worse while the person awaits treatment. The rule goes into effect Jan. 1, 2002.

Published in the November/December 2001 issue of Contractor Tools and Supplies magazine.
